Preparing for Surgery: Steps to Ensure Optimal Recovery

Set yourself up for success before and after surgery

Your surgery is an important step toward better health, and proper preparation can make a big difference in your recovery. Follow these steps to set yourself up for the best possible outcome.

Attend Our Spine School

Our Spine School is designed to help you feel confident and informed about your upcoming surgery. It is completely free and taught by our Piedmont rehab team.  You'll learn exactly what to expect before, during, and after your procedure.

How will I get in and out of bed?  Go up and down stairs? Use the toilet with the least amount of pain?  Knowledge is power, and understanding the process will help you manage stress and ask the right questions.

Prepare Your Home and Line Up Your Support

A smooth recovery starts with a comfortable home and having the right support. Take some time before your surgery to set up your space and arrange for help so you can focus on healing.

  • Clean and organize your home: Make sure you have fresh sheets and towels, and remove any tripping hazards like loose rugs or clutter.Use a sleep app like Calm to relax before bed.

  • Stock your pantry and freezer: Prep meals in advance and freeze them so you can focus on recovery instead of cooking.

  • Fill your prescriptions: Ensure you have all your regular medications and any new prescriptions ready.

  • Arrange for help: Have a family member or friend stay with you for the first night or two after surgery to assist with daily tasks like cooking, cleaning, or driving.

Prehab: Strengthen Your Body Before Surgery

Taking care of your body before surgery can help you heal faster and avoid complications. Follow these simple steps to make sure you're in the best shape possible for your procedure.

  • Maximize sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night to give your body the rest it needs. Use ice packs to reduce swelling and discomfort.

  • Follow an anti-inflammatory diet: Eat leafy greens, fatty fish, and other foods that reduce inflammation. Avoid processed foods and sugar.

  • Increase protein intake: Include lean protein sources like chicken, fish, or tofu to help your body heal and rebuild muscle.

  • Exercise as tolerated: Gentle movement like walking or stretching can keep your muscles strong. Always follow your doctor’s advice on safe exercises.

  • Stop smoking and minimize alcohol intake to make surgery safer and t prime your body for successful recovery.

Gather Non-Medical Tools for Pain Management

In addition to your prescribed medications, there are many tools that can help you manage pain and discomfort after surgery. Prepare these in advance to make your recovery more comfortable.

  • Heating pads and ice packs: These are great for managing swelling and discomfort in the days after surgery.

  • Mindfulness apps: Download apps like Calm to help manage anxiety and promote relaxation through meditation.

  • Practice breathing techniques: The 4-7-8 breathing technique can calm your mind and body, especially when pain or stress levels are high.

Keep a Running List of Questions for Your Doctor

It’s normal to have questions before surgery. Writing them down ahead of time will help you feel more prepared and confident on the day of your procedure.

We encourage our patients to ask their team important questions like:

  • What should I expect on the day of surgery?

  • How long will my recovery take?

  • Are there any restrictions on activities or diet after surgery?

Final Preparations Before Surgery

The day before surgery is the time to finalize any last-minute details. You can use this checklist to make sure you’re ready for your procedure.

Provide a concise checklist of tasks to complete the day before surgery:

  • Pack a small hospital bag: Include essentials like ID, medications, comfortable clothing, and toiletries. Keep your follow-up appointments to ensure you’re healing properly.

  • Double-check medication instructions: Follow any specific guidelines on fasting or stopping certain medications.

  • Confirm transportation: Make sure you have a ride to and from the hospital.
